THE ORGANIZATION
THE MISSION
The Kelly Fund for Lupus Inc. was founded in May 2008 by Brenda Blackmon. Her daughter Kelly was diagnosed with lupus and vowed after her life threatening recovery to make a difference in combating this disease.
Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood and kidneys.
The money raised by the Kelly Fund promotes awareness and understanding of the disease.

Brenda Blackmon has many professional accolades. In 2010, she won her fourth Emmy Award for Best Single Newscast and has been nominated for 15 additional Emmy Awards. Blackmon is also the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Broadcast Excellence. Additionally, she has won more than a dozen Associated Press Awards. Blackmon received a 2010 Inspiration through a Legendary Lifetime in Broadcasting award from the McDonalds Corporation. WWOR-TV presented a special salute in honor of her career that began in her hometown of Columbus, Georgia where she was recognized as One of the Century’s Most Influential.
However, closest to Blackmon’s heart are her contributions to the national campaign to help find a cure for Lupus. In addition to her support for The Lupus Research Alliance, Blackmon also founded her own organization, The Kelly Fund for Lupus, Inc. a tribute to her daughter Kelly who has Lupus. As we approach our 10th anniversary as an organization, we want to think about our accomplishments and new challenges--further outreach into minority communities. That is why we extend that reach of the second book by making it bilingual. Let's "Talk About It" in every language. Let's ALL work for a cure. All proceeds from sales of the book go towards lupus research.

BRENDA BLACKMON
Kelly graduated cum laude from Virginia Union University in 2005, she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History & Political Science. With her mom, she globally raises awareness for lupus. Her favorite Bible verse is 2 Corinthians 5:7 "For we walk by faith, not by sight." She's done that all of her life. For her, battling lupus is no different.
Brenda Blackmon is a multi-Emmy Award winning New York TV News Legend. Most recently she anchored the PIX11 News at 6:30 p.m.
She is still most recognized as Lead Anchor at WWOR-TV in New York. For 23 years she covered it all-Presidential Inaugurations, global exclusives and stories that changed us all, like 9-11. She is the founder of The Kelly Fund for Lupus, Inc., a 501©(3) dedicated to supporting those affected by Lupus, educating the public about it, and helping to find a cure for her daughter, Kelly and others.

ABOUT THE KELLY FUND
The company exists to support, serve and educate both those affected by lupus and the general public, with particular emphasis toward women in minority communities, by promoting awareness and understanding of the disease in an effort to improve treatment and diagnosis while searching for a cause and cure.
The company operates exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501© (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Emcee for Lupus Research Walk, booking signings in the community with fellow authors
EDUCATION
Going into schools to educate students on the importance of recognizing lupus symptoms. Schools, speaking to sororities etc. We also serve as emcees for galas & spreading lupus awareness along the way.
More than 16,000 new cases of lupus are reported annually across the United States.
Women of color are two to three times more likely to develop lupus than Caucasians.
7. 5% of children born to individuals with lupus develop the disorder.
It is believed that 5 million people throughout the world have a form of lupus.
Lupus often times causes a “lupus fog” making it hard to think, focus and remember things.
Today, between 80 and 90% of people with Lupus can live a normal lifespan.
